What does Vendanges Tardives (VT) mean?
It means ‘late harvest’ and is a legally protected term in Alsace. The wine must be made from one of the for noble grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris & Muscat) and must have a certain level of sugar ripeness. Some of the best wines labelled this way will have undergone Passerillage or have noble rot influence.
What does selection de Grains Nobles (SGN) mean?
These wines must be made from one of the four noble grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris & Muscat) and have a minimum level of sugar ripeness that is set higher than for VT wines. This is often achieved with the help of noble rot. These wines aren’t produced every year and only ever in small quantities.
