Alpine Orogeny

The Alps were formed as Africa and the Tephys Sea closed. It was only the Southern part of
Britain that was affected by the Alpine orogeny.

The main part of the orogeny occurred during the Tertiary period. Folding is well known in
Dorset where folds are near vertical and also on the Isle of Wight .
