Visible line
Represents visible edge and outlines of object drawn
Hidden line
Represents lines that are not visible in a given view
Section lines
Appear only on a sectional view where the surface has been cut
Center line
Indicates symmetry, center points, or axes.
Alternate long and short dashes
Dimension line
Denotes extent of dimension when used in conjunction with arrowheads
Extension line
Extends the surface or point away from the view of the dimensioning
Leader
Drawn diagonally, it directs a dimension or note to the area where it applies. Normally terminates with an arrowhead or dot
Cutting plane line
Shows where the imaginary cutting takes place to create a sectional view. May be a series of long dashes, or alternately two short dashes between single long dashes. Arrowheads indicate direction of sight.
Viewing plane line
Used in conjunction with removed views to show where the view would normally appear. Arrowheads indicate direction of sight
Short break line
Terminates a view to conserve space and avoid congestion. Also separates internal and external features with broken-out sections
Long line break
Allows removal of a long central portion of an object to shorten a view. Normally used in pairs.
Phantom line
Represents the outline of an adjacent part; shows alternate positioning of a given part; or replaces detail, such as spring coils, gear teeth, threads, etc. Drawn with two short dashes between single long dashes, but thinner than the cutting/viewing plane line.
Chain line
Used to indicate an area or portion of a surface that is to receive special treatment.
