National Recovery Administration
Aims
Aimed at Industrial Recovery
The NRA was to issue 557 codes of practice (rules) to each industry
To ensure fair competition, fair wages and hours of work.
Achievements
It is estimated that there around 1,750,000 workers by 1934
Many codes didn’t work as it was so different to how businesses had been working.
Employers such as Ford refused to adopt them
Civilian Conservation Corps
Aims
Industrial recovery by putting young men to work.
Supervised by army, men would live in camps
work on civil engineering jobs and looking after national parks.
Achievements
Lasted until 1942 and 3 million young men took part.
125,000 miles of road were built,
3 billion trees planted,
Public Works Administration
Aims
Industrial Recovery
$3.3 billion to be spent on things such as roads, dams, hospitals and schools
Lead to an increase in the demand from feeder industries which would create more jobs
Achievements
13,000 schools were built
50,000 miles of road
1933 only $110 million was spent
Civil Works Administration
Aims
As part of FERA
set up as an extension of the PWA for the very harsh winter of 1933-34
provide more employment
Achievements
Hugely successful employed around 4 million
50,000 teachers employed in order to keep schools open
It put $700 million into circulation
Federal Emergency Relief Administration
Aims
Relief, and employment.
Allocated an initial fund of $500 million to help those in need.
Money went to Home Relief Bureaus and Departments of Welfare for Poor Relief
Achievements Built five thousand public buildings seven thousand bridges, employed teachers over 1,500,000 adults were taught to read and write
Tennessee Valley Authority
Aims
To help modernise and relieve suffering in the poorest southern states of USA
Tennessee River ran through 7 states that were agriculturally dependent
Achievements
20 huge dams built to generate hydro electricity
residents of the area saw their income increase by 200% in the period 1929 to 1949.
