Alloys and their use Flashcards
What is the definition of alloy?
Alloy is the mixture of 2 or more elements with a fixed composition where the main element is metal.
How are the characteristic of the particles in pure metal?
- Particles of metal are the same size
- Particles are arranged in a neat and order manner
- Made of one type of metal
- Has spaces between particles
What is the characteristic of pure metal?
- Ductile
- Malleable
- Dull
- Soft
Why is pure metal malleable?
When force is applied on metal, the layers of particles will slide pass each other as all particles have the same size.
Pure metal has spaces between them. Hence when force is applied, particles will fill up empty spaces resulting change in shape of metal
How does adding metal changes affects the strength of a pure metal?
Adding different metals into pure metals
- Disrupt the orderly arranged particles
- Particles fills up empty space of pure metal
- Layers of particles cannot slide pass each other easily.
State the aims of producing alloys
- They do not change shape easily
- Do not corrode easily
- Shiny
- To produce specific characteristics of metal alloy ( superconductor)
