Allotropes of carbon Flashcards
Draw a metallic structure?
Draw :)
Why can metals conduct electricity?
By allowing free electrons to move between the atoms.
Why do covalent compounds have low melting and boiling points?
Because the attraction between the molecules are easy to pull about.
Why do covalent compounds not conduct electricity?
They have no overall charge so they do not conduct electricity.
What is a monomer and a polymer?
polymer: many parts in (Greek)
polymer are very large molecules made of monomers joined together to form long chains.
Monomer: is the single part of the polymer
How are polymers formed from monomers?
E.G monomer = A
polymer= A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A
many monomers together make a polymer
What are allotropes of carbon?
Graphite structure
diamond structure
What is metallic bonding?
The electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and the sea of negative delocalised electrons
Why are metals malleable?
layers of ions can slide other each other when a force is applied.
what does malleable mean?
able to bend, hammer, shape a metal without it breaking.
What is an alloy?
a mixture of 2 or more elements.
When does metallic bonding occur?
When you have a metal in a liquid or a solid state.
