What is an Alliance?
An agreement between countries that benefit each of them
What was the Alliance System?
The alliance system meant that going to war with one member of an alliance would mean going to war with all of its members.
The Treaty of London 1839
Several European powers agreed to defend Belgium if it was attacked. Both Britain and Prussia signed the Treat of London.
The Three Emperors’ League 1873
An Alliance made between the emperors of Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary. This alliance was set up by Otto von Bismarck in order to weaken France.
The Dual Alliance 1879
Germany and Austria-Hungary agreed to support each other against Russia. Bismarck thought this would prevent war as Russia wouldn’t want to fight both countries.
The Triple Alliance 1882
Italy joined Germany and Austria-Hungary to turn the Dual Alliance into the Triple Alliance
The Franco-Russian Alliance 1894
France was threatened by the Triple alliance so they allied with Russia. This was good for Russia because it meant France loaned them money
The Entente Cordiale 1904
This is French for ‘friendly agreement’. This meant France and Britain ending their long history of conflict
The Triple Entente 1907
An alliance between France, Russia and Britain. This was the Franco-Russian Alliance and the Entente cordiale joining up.
