What is a proper noun?
Names of people, places, brands, etc
What is a concrete noun?
Things that you can physically see
What is an abstract noun?
Concepts, states, qualities and emotions
What is a collective noun?
Groups of people, animals or things
What are the 3 types of Noun Phrases?
The 3 types of Noun Phrases are:
- Determiner
- Pre-modifier
- Head Noun
What are the 4 types of Adjectives?
The 4 types of Adjectives are:
- Attributive (pre-modify)
- Predicative (post-modify)
- Superlative
- Comparative
What is an attributive adjective?
Attributive - Pre-modify
Adjectives place before the head noun.
What is a predicative adjective?
Predicative - Post-modify
Adjectives after the head noun linked using a copula verb.
What is a superlative adjective?
Superlative - ends with ‘est’
The highest extent of something
What is a comparative adjective?
Comparative - end with ‘er’

What are the 5 types of clauses?
The 5 types of clauses are:
- Main Clause
- Subordinate Clause
- Co-ordinate Clause

What is a main clause?
Makes complete sense on its own
What is a subordinate clause?
A clause that is DEPENDENT on the MAIN CLAUSE within a sentence.
What is a coordinate clause?
A clause that begins with a coordinating conjunction.
i.e. ‘but’
What is a conditional clause?
A type of subordinate clause which beings with ‘if’ or ‘unless’
What is a relative clause?
A type of subordinate clause that begins with ‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’ or ‘when’.
What are the 6 types of sentences?
The 6 types of sentences are:
- Minor Sentence
- Simple Sentence
- Compound Sentence
- Complex Sentence
- Compound-Complex Sentence
- Syntactical Parallelism
What is a minor sentence?
Does not contain a subject or verb
What is a simple sentence?
Contains one main verb idea
What is a compound sentence?
Two main clauses connected together with a co-ordinate conjunction.
What is a complex sentence?
Has one main clause but also a subordinate clause.
What is a compound-complex sentence?
Will combine the use of co-ordinate and subordinate clauses.
What is in adverb?
An adverb modifies a verb, adjective or further develops another adverb.
What is manner?

‘Manner’ is HOW something has been done.
What is ‘place’ in terms of the adverb topic?
The ‘place’ is WHERE something took place.
What is ‘time’ in terms of the adverb topic?
‘Time’ is WHEN something took place

There is no final conjunction present.
e.g. When Simon went to the supermarket he bought pasta, milk, tomatoes, bread.
What is Poly-Syndetic Listing?
The conjunction is repeated constantly throughout the list.
e.g. When Simon went to the supermarket he bought pasta and milk and tomatoes and bread.
What are the 7 types of Aspect?
The seven types of Aspect are:
- Perfect Aspect
- Past Perfect Aspect
- Progressive Aspect
- Present Progressive Aspect
- Past Progressive Aspect
- Present Perfect Progressive Aspect
- Past Perfect Progressive Aspect
What is Perfect Aspect?
The PERFECT ASPECT is constructed by using the auxiliary ‘have’ + Past Participle
What is Past Perfect Aspect?
The PAST PERFECT ASPECT (had + past participle) describes a previous time in the past.
What is Progressive Aspect?
The PROGRESSIVE ASPECT is constructed using the auxiliary be + present participle or using the auxiliary have have + / be + present participle. The Progress aspect implies that an activity is ongoing and is probably not complete yet.
What is an example of Present Progressive Aspect?
