They are used to determine whether or not the object is moving at any point of time, it is also used for determining what speed the object is moving at

Either a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction

Transfer the speed, direction and torque of rotating power sources

Spikes on the sides of gears

The bit where the teeth meet
