When is the accusative case used
When the noun is the direct object of a verb
When is the dative case used
Corresponds to English “to”. For example, Ivan gives the flowers to Anna. “Anna” here would be in the dative case, the indirect object of the sentence
When is the genitive case used
- To indicate possession (Eg Anna’s Cat. “Cat of Anna”. Anna would be in the genitive case)
- Cardinal numbers, description, location, time, and some prepositions
- Answers the questions “of whom?”, “of what?”
When is the instrumental case used
- Answers the questions “with whom?”, “with what?”
- An action performed with a tool or instrument (eg He sliced the bread with a knife. Knife would be instrumental)
- Loosely corresponds to english “By”, “With”.
