1974 - government defined the major regions
1996 - started the Wine of Certified Origin scheme (revised in 2002)
*one revision was that varietal wine must not include any more than 15% of other varietals

If sold in NZ wine must contain 75% of the varietal. If exported, wine must contain 85% of the varietal to be labeled as such.
