Joes response to that Chris has said shows that Chris and joe don’t met eye to eye and that they don’t agree with each other on many things
“You have such a talent for ignoring things”
This shows conflict as Chris is confronting Joe about his attitude to some things
“It is not Chris’s place”
Joe is saying that Chris needs to back off from Ann as she was Larry’s girl and joe feels that it is wrong that he takes her.
“Because it’s good money, there’s nothing wrong with that money.”
Keller is trying to persuade Chris that the money is legitimate when Chris is clearly uncomfortable with his own name being above the business. His own comfortable lifestyle also makes Chris uncomfortable, particularly his father turning the war to his advantage financially, when so many of Chris’s men died. The irony is that there is something very wrong with the money – it’s tainted by the blood of dead airmen.
“If Larry is dead then your father killed him”
Kate is trying to stay strong and we see here that she never wants to let Larry go as if she did then she would be accepting the fact that her own husband killed there own son.
“I did it for you Chris”
Joe is trying to blame Chris as the reason for shipping out the cracked cylinder heads as he is too cowardly to take the blame all by himself.
“The business! The business doesn’t inspire me”
This is Chris’s response to joe after he has been told that Joe shipped out the cracked cylinder heads so that the business would stay up running.
“I know you’re no worse than most men but I thought you where better. I never saw you as a man, I saw you as my father”
Chris is very disappointed when he finds out that his father was the one responsible out the cylinder heads, he thought he was better then most men and even worse he thought that he could trust him as he was his father.
“A kind of - responsibility. Man for man”
Chris expresses his understanding of what he sees as the import and lesson that he has learnt from the war. He has grasped the idea of social responsibility and how important it is to see one place in society.
“I think to him they where all my sons”
We see that Joe is finally recognising his responsibility from his son Larry’s death, as he sees that the 21 pilots that did where also his sons.
