Deltoid
Origin:
- Lateral 1/3 half of clavicle
- Acromion spine of scapula
Insertion:
- Deltoid Tuberosity of Humerus
Action:
-Clavicular portion: flex arm at shoulder
-Medially rotates arm at shoulder
-Acromion part: Abduction of arm at shoulder beyond 15 degree
Pectoralis Major
Origin:
- Anterior surface of sternum w/ upper costal cartilages
- Anterior medial half of clavicle
Insertion:
- Crest of greater tubercle of humerus
Action:
-Clavicular head: Flex arm at shoulder
-Sternum head: Extend arm at shoulder
-Both heads: Medially rotates arm at shoulder and adducts arm at shoulder
Biceps Brachii
Origin:
- Supraglenoid tubercle of scapula,
- Coracoid process of scapula
Insertion:
- Radial tuberosity of radius
Action:
-Flex the arm weakly at shoulder
-Flexes forearm at elbow
-Supinates forearm at elbow
Triceps Brachii
Origin:
- Infraglenoid Tubercle of Scapula
- Posterior surface of humerus (superior to radial groove)
- Posterior surface of humerus (inferior to radial groove)
Insertion:
- Olecranon process of ulna
Action:
- extension of forearm at elbow
Brachialis
Origin:
- Anterior distal half of humerus
Insertion:
- Coracoid process of ulna
- Ulna tuberosity of ulna
Action:
- Flexes forearm at elbow
Subscapularis Muscles
Origin:
- Subscapular fossa of scapula
Insertion:
- Lesser tubercle of humerus
Action:
- Medially rotates arm
Supraspinatus Muscle
Origin:
- Supraspinatus Fossa of scapula
Insertion:
- Greater tubercle of humerus
Action:
- Abduction of arm at shoulder
Infraspinatus Muscle
Origin:
- Infraspinatus fossa of scapula
Insertion:
- Middle part of greater tubercle of the humerus
Action:
- Laterally rotates the arm
Teres Minor
Origin:
- Middle part of lateral axillary of the scapula
Insertion:
- Inferior aspect of the greater tubercle of the humerus
Action:
- Laterally rotates the arm at shoulder
- Weakly adducts arm
Teres Major
Origin:
- Lower lateral border and inferior angle of the scapula
Insertion:
- Medial lip of the intertubercular groove of anterior humerus
Action:
- Adducts arm at shoulder
- Medially rotates arm at shoulder
- Extends arm at shoulder
Latissimus Dorsi
Origin:
- Spinous processes of T7 – L5 vertebrae
- Iliac crest of sacrum
- Inferior angle of the scapula
- Lower three or four ribs
Insertion:
- Floor of intertubercular groove of humerus
Action:
- Adducts arm at shoulder
- Medially rotates arm at shoulder
- Extends arm at shoulder
Trapezius
Origin:
-Nuchal line of occipital bone
-Spinous processes of vertebra
-Spinous processes of thoracic vertebra
Insertion:
-Lateral 1/3rd clavicle
-Acromion and spine of the scapula
-Medial part of spine of scapula
Action:
-Depression and elevation of shoulder
Pronator teres
Origin:
-Medial epicondyle of humerus & distal supracondylar ridge
- Medial side of coronoid process of ulna.
Insertion:
-Middle of lateral surface of the radius
Action:
-Pronates the forearm
-Flexes the forearm at elbow
Extensor carpi ulni
Origin:
-Lateral epicondyle of humerus
Insertion:
-Base of 5th metacarpal
Action:
-Extends hand at wrist
-Adducts hand at wrist
Brachioradialis
Origin:
-Lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus
Insertion:
-Styloid process of radius
Action:
-Flexes forearm at elbow
Psoas Major
Origin:
- Body/bases of transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae
Insertion:
- Lesser trochanter of femur
Action:
-Flexes thigh at hip
-Laterally rotates thigh at hip
-Flexes vertebral column (torso)
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Origin:
- Anterior Iliac crest
Insertion:
- Lateral condyle of tibia via iliotibial tract
Action:
-Abducts thigh at hip
-Flexes thigh at hip
Pectineus
Origin:
- Pectineal line along the superior ramus of the pubis
Insertion:
- Posterior surface of femur, inferior to the lesser trochanter
Action:
-Adduct thigh at hip
-Flexes thigh at hip
Iliacus
Origin:
- Iliac fossa of os coxa
Insertion:
- Lesser trochanter of femur
Action:
-Flexes the thigh at hip
-Laterally rotates thigh at hip
-Flexes trunk and pelvis on thigh (bend forward)
Sartorius
Origin:
- Anterior superior iliac spine and the region just below it
Insertion:
- Proximal tibia, medial to tibial tuberosity (part of pes anserinus)
Action:
- flexes leg at knee
Gracilis
Origin:
- Inferior border of pubic body near symphysis
Insertion:
- Proximal medial surface of tibia (part of pes anserinus)
Action:
- adducts thigh at hip
Adductor longus
Origin:
- Superior aspect of pubis, below pubic tubercle
Insertion:
- Middle third of linea aspera of femur along medial lip
Action:
-Adduct thigh at hip
-Flexes thigh at hip
Rectus femoris
Origin:
- Anterior inferior iliac spine and ilium above the acetabulum
Insertion:
- Quadriceps tendon to base of patella and onto tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament
Action:
