All Liquor Flashcards
Difference between Scotch, Whiskey, Bourbon, Cognac and Brandy?
Scotch, Bourbon, & Whiskey are made from fermented grains. Cognac & Brandy are made from fermented grapes and distilled wine which ups the alcohol level. All Scotch is Whiskey, but not all Whiskey is Scotch. Whiskey is distilled rom fermented grain mash (wheat, rye, barley, and/or corn). It is then aged in wooden barrels. Bourbon must be made in the US, 51 percent corn, free from added flavoring.
Difference between tequila and mezcal?
Mezcal can be produced from up to 50 species of the agave plant and tequila uses just one: agave tequilana Weber, or Weber blue agave. Agave used for Tequila is steamed in ovens, while the plant is often roasted in underground pits for mezcal, which creates that distinctive smoky note.
