What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist.
What is an element?
An element is a substance that is made from only one type of atom
What is a compound?
A compound contains two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions
Name the scientific model of the atom order
- Atoms as tiny indivisible spheres
- The plum pudding model, a ball of positive charge with negative electrons embedded in it
- The Nuclear model, scattering experiment with alpha beams being deflected.
- Bohr, Electrons orbit the nucleus at specific distances
- Chadwick, protons make up the positive charge and neutrons which have a mass but no charge are also found in the nucleus.
Whats the relative charge of a proton?
+1
Whats the relative charge of a neutron?
0
Whats the relative charge of a electron?
-1
Whats the relative mass of a proton?

Whats the relative mass of a neutron?

Whats the relative mass of a electron?
1 over 2000
Number of protons is equal to
the number of electrons
What can describe an atom?
Atomic number and mass number
What is the atomic number?
The number in the bottom left that tells you how many protons there are
What is the mass number?
The mass number is in the top left and tells you the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom
How do you get the number of neutrons?
Atomic number - mass number
