The 3-6 second rule.
What best describes “cushion”?
The space between you and drivers to the front and back of you.
How does one use the rule for cushioning?
The 3-6 second rule can be used by taking a landmark on the side of the road, such as a road sign, then counting seconds (1 one thousand, 2…) after the driver ahead of you passed it, but before you do. If you cannot count to 4 seconds then you are following too closely.
How much time should you give yourself for poor driving conditions?

When parking on an uphill incline with a curb, which direction should you point your front tires in relation to the curb?
You should turn your tires to the opposite direction of the curb, purpose being to let your tires slowly move and catch on the curb before engaging your parking brake. What is a DDI?
Diverging Diamond Interchange
What is a Highway Interchange?
A system of connecting roadways with one or more separators letting traffic on different elevations flow through.
What is the purpose of a DDI?
A Diverging Diamond Interchange is a recent design from engineers meant to help traffic flow. Traffic flowing in a certain direction crosses over the traffic from the other side, ultimately ending up on the opposite side of the protective barriers they started in. It also has a single, side entry lane to allow incoming traffic to easily enter the freeway from an upper connecting bridge, and more lanes for traffic merging from the freeway to help prevent trucks or commercial vehicles from holding up freeway traffic.
When do crossovers happen at a DDI?
Only following a traffic light signal.
What must you be careful of before parking in a roadway?
That you are not obstructing traffic, limiting visibility, or in an illegal parking area.
What are ALL the rules to follow when you need to back up your car?
- Check behind your car BEFORE you get in to make sure it’s clear.
- Turn around and look through the rear-view window, even if you have a rear view camera.
- Back up SLOWLY
To Parallel Park Correctly, you MUST
- Check Traffic behind you and signal you are stopping. (Brake Gently, then turn on your right turn signal to indicate that you’re going to park)
- Stop alongside the forward car, when your car’s back bumper aligns with theirs. Leave about 2 feet between your vehicles.
- Shift to reverse. Look over your right shoulder, and slowly back up, with your steering wheel sharply turned right.
- When your front bumper passes the rear bumper of the car in front of you, sharply turn the steering wheel to the left. Continue backing until in line with the curb.
- Straighten your wheels and slowly push forward until you have enough cushion.
How do you park on a downhill grade?
Turn your wheels towards the curb and engage the parking brake.
How do you park on an uphill grade with a curb?
Turn your steering wheel to the left, release your brake to allow the top right tire to rest against the curb, then engage your parking brake.
How do you park on an uphill grade with no curb?
Turn your front tires away from traffic, so that your vehicle will move backwards away from traffic (To the right in almost ALL cases) in case of brake failure. Engage your parking brake.
How do you perform an emergency park on a highway or street?
- Pull over to the shoulder of the road as close to the curb as possible (if there is a curb) or as far from traffic as possible.
- Set your parking brake, shift into park, or leave the car in gear (for manual transmission) and turn off the engine.
- Set proper emergency signals
- Stay with your vehicle until help arrives if at all possible. Otherwise lock your vehicle if you absolutely NEED to leave it.
When is it illegal to park?
- Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant
- On a sidewalk
- In front of a public or private driveway
- Within an intersection
- On a crosswalk or within 20 feet of a crosswalk
- On any freeway or interstate highway (barring emergencies)
- Any prohibited parking areas marked with a sign.
- Within 50 feet of a railroad
- On a bridge or in a tunnel
- In any way creating a hazard for other vehicles.
What must you NEVER do if you miss your exit off a highway?
NEVER Stop or ESPECIALLY Reverse on a highway. If you miss your exit, you MUST go to the next exit and find a means of joining traffic going back towards your destination.
What side of multi-lane roadways should you drive?
The right most half, unless passing or signs indicate otherwise.
During rush hours, which lanes should you try to leave while driving on a highway and why?
The right most lanes. Since they are the entry and exit points, it’s best to leave more room for vehicles to exit and enter.
What should you do if you need assistance on the freeway?
- Pull over to the right shoulder as far as possible. Avoid stopping on or near freeway ramps.
- Turn on emergency flashers or raise the hood of your car to signal.
- At night, signal to other drivers through turning on an inside dome light or using emergency flares or portable warning signals.
- Wait for help. Do NOT walk along the freeway.
What vehicles can use an HOV lane during posted hours?
- A vehicle carrying two or more persons (driver included)
- Car Pool Vehicles
- Motorcycles
- Busses
- Vehicles with “Alternative Fuel” or “Hybrid/Energy Efficient” license plates
What vehicles can use an HOV lane outside of posted hours?
- Car Pool Vehicles
- Busses
- Motorcycles
-Vehicles with “Alternative Fuel” or
“Hybrid/Energy Efficient” license plates.
How should you treat the lanes of a highway?
Drive on the right most lane unless passing or during rush hour to allow cars easy access and exit from the highway. On a three lane highway, the middle lane should be the main travel lane, the right most lane left for entry/exit, and the left most lane for passing.
What should you do if you come across a flashing red traffic light?
Treat it as a stop sign. Come to a complete stop, yield to any vehicles already in the intersection, yield right of way where required, then proceed when the way is clear.
What should you do if you come across a flashing yellow traffic light?
Slow down coming towards the intersection, then proceed with caution if the roadway is clear.
What does a yellow arrow indicate on a traffic signal?
The same as a standard yellow signal. The light is about to change to red. If you are not already in the intersection, wait for the light to turn green in the indicated direction.
What does a flashing yellow arrow indicate on a traffic signal?
Yield the right of way to any oncoming pedestrians or vehicles, then proceed with caution if the roadway is clear.
If a traffic signal is inoperative, what should you do?
Treat it as a four-way stop. Stop fully, then proceed with caution if the roadway is clear and no other vehicles are coming towards the intersection. If more vehicles arrive then the right-most vehicle has the right of way and all others must yield before proceeding.
What is the main rule of right of way for a four way intersection?
The rightmost vehicle has the right of way, exempting cases in which them exercising right of way would cause a collision.
What is the “Right of Way” from a legal perspective?
No one person really owns the right of way. It only dictates who must yield to whom. Right of way should not be taken at all if a crash may be caused as a result.
What does a flashing yellow PEDESTRIAN signal mean?
A Pedestrian has activated the signal and is waiting to cross.
