Right of Entry
During an emergency, fire has the right to enter and remain on premises. Once control has been relinquished, FD needs to have permission from owner, a warrant, or exigent circumstances
Search and Seizure
Fire scene investigation. The person must have the right of entry through the emergency, consent of owner, or warrant.
In order to remove property, you must have owners consent or a warrant.
Statements and Miranda Warning
If the investigation turns into a criminal investigation and an individual becomes the focus of the investigation, that person must be advised of their constitutional rights before being interviewed or placed in custody
Chain of custody and continuity of evidence
Evidence taken from a scene must be documented and a chain of custody developed and maintained to ensure integrity of the evidence
Spoliation
Evidence that is damaged, altered, lost, or destroyed during the cause of determination and collection process. This jeopardizes any legal proceedings.
Circumstantial Evidence
Supports an inference formed from direct evidence. Ex: Direct Evidence is a witness saw someone running from the scene. CE: that person was a disgruntled employee. Inference: that person out of anger caused the fire
Direct Evidence
Found through five physical senses. Witness statements about individuals, someone smelling propane, Company Officer’s observations.
Warm zone
people who are directly supporting the work being done in the hot zone. hydraulic tool power plant, emergency lighting. Full PPE and ready to enter hot zone. “safe haven”
cold zone
IC, RIC, PIO, rehab, staging for people and equipment.

Scalar Structure
uninterrupted series of steps or a chain of command. Top down decisions. Bottom to top feedback.
Unity of Command
each person reports to one, and only one, designated authority (Chief). Depends on chain of command and functional subervision
Chain of Command
path of responsibility from the top of the org to the bottom and vise versa
Functional Command
workers report to more than one supervisor. Deviates from unity of command. Distinction between line and staff functions are blurred. A company offer refers to a fire marshal for codes, and a BC for all other duties.
Forming
Employees are initially uncertain of their roles in a group. As relationships grow, trust and respect develop.
Members begin seeing themselves as part of the group, becomes enthusiastic about challenges and new projects.
