Alkenes (additional reactions of alkenes) Flashcards

1
Q

Whats the test of identifying an alkene?

A

Adding few drops of bromine solution (bromine has a reddish brown colour)
If it contains alkene it will become colourless (e.g. hex-1-ene)
If it’s an alkane (hexane) it will keep its reddish brownish colour.

turns clear in carbon carbon double bonds & remains its colour in carbon carbon single bonds

(bromine doesn’t react with alkanes but does react with alkenes)

Q

why does the C=C (=) have high electron density? and what would it attract?

A

because it the double bond shares electrons meaning it has a higher e- charge so it attracts positive cations.

Q

what happens with a Br-Br bond sometimes?

A

Electrons when being at the same side of a molecule for too long form an intermolecular force called
Van der waals forces come because the charge is sometimes unevenly distributed around a molecule

so the molecule closer to the double bond repels and forms a positive bond whereas the one furthest away forms a negative charge
