Alkenes Flashcards
Hydrogenation
React w hydrogen gas + PASSED over nickel catalyst at 150 C , ALKANE produced
E isomer
Same groups across double bond
Z isomer
Same groups both above /below double bond
Cis/trans isomerism
Special case of E/Z
Carbon atoms have one group in common
Cis - same groups on same side (Z)
Trans - same groups on opposite sides (E)
Can only be used when each carbon atom in double bond is attached to a single hydrogen atom
When do E/Z isomers occur
When each carbon atom of double bond is attached to diff groups
Stereoisomers
Same structural formula but different arrangement in space
Why Alkenes more reactive
Pi bond has low bond enthalpy, weaker than sigma bond
Electron density of bond spread out above + below plane of sigma bond
Pi bond STICKS out, Pi electrons are on outside, more exposed electrophiles likely to attack
Compound with two double bonds
DIENE
Compounds with two carboxykuc acid FG
DIOC
Useful ways to use polymers
Recycled to make other plastic materials
Combustion to generate electricity
As organic feedstock
