Alkanes (saturated Hydrocarbons) Flashcards
What is a compound?
Two different types of atoms chemically bonded together.
What is crude oil?
It is a substance made up of mixtures of hydrocarbons from the ground.
What’s a mixture?
A mixture consists of two or more elements that are not chemically bonded together.
How can you separate things in mixtures?
Because there properties are not changed it can be separated in different ways such as distillation.
What dose crude oil consist of?
Mostly Hydrocarbons
So hydrocarbons vary in size?
Yes
True or false the lager the hydrocarbon the more viscous?
False
True or false the lager the hydrocarbon the higher the boiling point?
True
The lager the hydrocarbon the more volatile it is?
False
True or false The lager the hydrocarbon the less easily it ignites?
True
How can you Separate crude oil into fractions?
Fractional distillation
What is a alkane?
A saturated hydrocarbon
What collects at the bottom of the fractionating column?
The fractions with a high boiling point
What goes into the fractionating column
Crude oil vapor
Why does things with a lower boiling point get to the top of the fractionating column?
Because they get to the top faster and don’t cool down
Why shouldn’t you use a Bunsen burner to ehat crude oil?
The short chain hydrocarbons are flammable that’s why there used for fuel
What comes first bitumen or lubricating oil?
Bitumen
What’s kerosene used for?
Fuel for jet aircraft
What comes out the top of a fractionating column?
Refinery gasses
Wheres the hottest part of a fractionating column?
The bottom
What is gasoline used for?
Fuels for cars!
Big fat lions don’t kill giant rabbits is the distillation Oder is this right?
Yes
What is the spine of a hydrocarbon?
The chain of carbon atoms
What is it called when carbon atoms join together?
A single carbon bond
