Alkanes Flashcards
Define:
Saturated Hydrocarbons
contains the maximum possible number of H per C
Isomers
Same molecular formula but different structure
2 Types of Isomers
- Structural/Constitutional
2. Stereoisomers
Structural Isomers differ in?
order of attachment of atoms
- chain isomers
- position isomers
- functional isomers
Stereoisomers are?
same bonding attachment but different in spatial orientations:
- Geometric isomers
- Optical isomers
- Conformational Stereoisomers
Types of geometric isomers
cis and trans
- cis: same side
- trans: opposite side
Optical isomers
a chiral object cannot be superimposable on its mirror image
Enantiomers
- molecules are NONSUPERIMPOSABLE MIRROR IMAGES of each other. All other stereoisomers are diastereomers
- identical physical properties but differ in the direction at which their solutions rotate
Levoratory
counterclockwise
Dextroratory
clockwise
Conformational Stereoisomers
Different arrangement resulting from different bond rotation
Newman projection
- Eclipsed: least stable
- Staggered gauche
- Staggered anti: MOST stable
Reaction of Alkanes: Combustion
+O2 and heat –> CO2 + H2O
Reaction of Alkanes: Halogenation
+X2 –> Alkyl Halide + HX
note: involves formation of free radical intermediate
Reaction of Cycloalkanes: Ring opening
+H2
