Alkanes Flashcards
1
Q
What is an alkane?
A
An alkane is a chain of saturated hydrocarbons.
2
Q
How are alkanes named?
A
Methane = 1 carbon
Ethane = 2 carbons
Propane = 3 carbons
Butane = 4 carbons
Pentane = 5 carbons
Hexane = 6 carbons
3
Q
What are the properties of an alkane?
A
-POLARITY: Non-polar due to the electronegativities cancelling out.
-BOILING POINT: Longer the hydrocarbon chain, the increased intermolecular force, the increased boiling point
-SOLUBILITY: Alkanes are insoluble in water. This is due to the strength of the water molecules.
-REACTIVITY: Relatively unreactive
