What is an alkyl group?
An alkyl group is when a hydrocarbon has one less hydrogen and only the partial structure remains.
What does staggered mean?
It is when the hydrogens and carbons and furthest spaced apart so they are most stable and have the lowest energy.
What does eclipsed mean?
This is when the hydrogens and carbons are closest together therefore is the most unstable and has the highest energy.
What is a newman projection
A Newman projection views the C-C bond directly end-on and represents the two carbon atoms by a circle. Bonds attached to the front carbon are represented by lines
to a dot in the centre of the circle, and bonds attached to the rear carbon are represented by lines to the outer circle.
What are constitutional isomers?
Constitutional isomers vary in structure due to how the molecules are arranged.
What are stereoisomers?
Stereoisomers are isomers which vary in their spacial arrangement
What does cis mean?
It means that the substituents are on the same side of a bond (same plane).
What does trans mean?
It means that the substituents are on opposite sides of the plane (bond)
