Alkane Flashcards
prepration,reactions and properties +structure
Difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
- Saturated Hydrocarbons contains C-C single bond
- Unsaturated are C-C double and triple bond
What is homolytic fission
When bond between two atoms breaak and electrons are distributed equally.
What is heterolytic fission
when bond between twwo atoms break and one atom gets +ve charge while another gets negative one.
unequal distribution of electrons.
What are alkanes?
Open chain hydrocarbons containing onle C-C single bond.
Properties of Alkane
- Alkanes are nonpolar organic …. insoluble in water
- Density:0.8g/cm^3
- Boiling point is low , increase with the increasing number of carbon atoms.
- C1 to C4—-Gas
- C5 t0 C17—Liquids
- C17>……….Solids
Difference of boiling point between brached and unbranched alkane
B.P of Straight>Branced because staright provide more surface area
surface are is directly proportional to B.P
Hybridization of alkane
Sp3 , 109.5 degree , Tetrahedral , 1.54Angstom .
6 properties
Cycloalakanes?
- Cyclic chain alkanes
- little more reactive than alkanes
- 60 degree due to angle strain
- less B.p than alkanes because of angle strain
- C3 and C4——gases
- C5 and above………liquid
Another name of alkanes and meaning of them
Parrafins—– Latin
para=little + affins= affinity
means they have less reacttivity strength.
Why alkanes are less reactive
- Because they are non polar in nature and find no polar reaction side.
- C-C bond between them is so strong in alkane due to sigma bonds only.
