Algebraic Expressions and Equations Flashcards
What is a parameter and what is another name for it?
A value we already know. Another name is a coefficient.
What is a variable?
A symbol for a number we don’t know.
What are like terms?
Terms that have the same variables and powers of the variables are the same.
What are 2 examples of like terms?
- 5x and 14x
2. 5xy and 14xy
What can happen to like terms?
They can be collected and their coefficients can be added or subtracted.
What are the 4 steps to solving a linear equation?
- Isolate the required variable,
- Collect like terms and simplify,
- Reduce to unit variable on LHS,
- Check.
In one sentence, how are simultaneous equations solved?
By solving the linear equations by elimination and substitution.
What is the first step in solving simultaneous equations?
Making Y equal.
What happens if the Y sign is the same, and what happens if the Y sign is different?
Same = subtract the equations from each other, Different = add the equations to each other.
In a graphical representation of simultaneous equations, what is it called when there is one solution where the lines cross?
Consistent independent.
In a graphical representation of simultaneous equations, what is it called when there are no solutions?
Inconsistent.
In a graphical representation of simultaneous equations, what is it called when there are infinite solutions where the lines cross?
Dependent.
