Algebra Terms Flashcards
Variable
The letters used in algebra and they stand for numbers
e.g. x, a, n, m, t…
Pronumeral
The letters used in algebra and they stand for numbers

Term
Either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together. Terms are separated by + or − signs, or sometimes by divide.
e.g. 4(5), 4a²b,-5n²a²
Constant
A known number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number. The letter has to have a known number.
Example: in “x + 5 = 9”, 5 and 9 are constants.
Co-efficient
A number used to multiply a variable.
Example: 6z means 6 times z, and “z” is a variable, so 6 is a coefficient.
Variables with no number have a coefficient of 1.
Example: x is really 1x.
Sometimes a letter stands in for the number.
Example: In ax2 + bx + c, “x” is a variable, and “a” and “b” are coefficients.
Expression
Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something without an equals sign.
Examples:
* 2 + 3 is an expression
* 3 − x/2 is also an expression
Note: an expression does not have an equals sign. In fact none of these: = ≠ < > ≤ ≥
Equation
An equation says that two things are equal. It will have an equals sign “=” like this:
x + 2 = 6
That equations says:
what is on the left (x + 2) is equal to what is on the right (6)
So an equation is a statement “this equals that”
