Algebra Flashcards
How do you expand single brackets?
Example: 4 (a+1)
4a=4a
41=4
=4a+4
How do you expand double brackets?
Example:(x+2)(x+3)
Xx=x^2
X3=3x
2x=2x
23=6
=x^2+3x+2x+6
=x^2+6x+6
What is an equation?
Example :5๐ฅ + 2 = 47
An equation is formed when two expressions have the same value for some unknown algebraic term.
What is an expression?
Example:3๐ฅ + 2
An expression is a collection of numbers, algebraic terms and operations describing one or multiple calculations.
What is a formula?
Example:๐ = 2(๐ + ๐ค)
A formula is a collection of numbers, algebraic terms and operations describing how to find the value of a specific variable.
What is an identity?
Example:7(๐ฅ โ 3) โก 7๐ฅ โ 21
An identity is two expressions that are always equal in value.
How do you add and subtract indices?
Example: 7๐^3 + 4๐3 โ 2๐^3 = 9๐^3
You add or subtract the base
How do you divide and multiply by indices?
Example: ๐^4 ร ๐^2 ร ๐^5 ร ๐ โก ๐^5๐^7
๐ฅ^๐ ร ๐ฅ^๐ โก ๐ฅ^๐+๐
You add the base and the indices with the same letter
Example: 15๐ฆ^14 รท 5๐ฆ^3 โก 3๐ฆ^11
๐ฅ^๐ รท ๐ฅ^๐ โก ๐ฅ^๐โ๐
You subtract the base and the indices with the same letter
What is the equation for a straight line?
๐ฆ = ๐๐ฅ + ๐
Y is the y axis
X is the x axis
M is the gradient
C is the y axis intercept
What does term to term rule mean?
Tells you how a sequence changes from one term to the next
What does the position to term rule mean?
This tells you how any term in a sequence is generated
