Alertness Flashcards
Blind Spot
An area not covered by your mirrors.
Overtaking
Never overtake on the highest point of a hill, when approaching a bend, a dip in the road, or when approaching a left-hand / any junction.
Large Vehicles
Keep well back when following a large vehicle as this helps the driver of the vehicle see you in their mirrors.
Tired when Driving
Find a suitable place to stop and get some rest. Allow fresh air into your vehicle.
Things that can cause you to lose concentration and distract your attention
Loud music, using a mobile phone, tuning the car radio, looking at a map and objects hanging from your interior mirror.
A-Frames / Windscreen Pillars
These can obstruct your view of the road, especially when approaching a bend or junction- at junctions always look twice for cyclists and motorcyclists.
Headlights
Always turn your lights on at dusk, even if the street lights have yet to come on. You use lights so other road users can see you.
Alcohol and Illegal Substances (Drugs)
These will affect your ability to drive; do not drive when under the influence.
Medicine
Do not drive if you have taken a medicine that has the potential to make you feel tired and groggy; if unsure consult your doctor.
Reversing
If you cannot see behind you when reversing, ask someone to guide you.
Lights
Switch on your car lights when it starts to get dark, even if the street lights are not on.
Using your horn to be seen
Where you cannot be seen e.g. at a hump bridge, you may have to sound your horn to warn other road users of your presence.
Objects
Those hanging from your interior mirror may restrict your view.
Staying focused whilst driving
Have regular rest stops, always take a break after driving for two hours, and plan your route before setting off.
Mobile phones
Never use a hand-held mobile whilst driving, if you receive a call while driving pull up and stop in a safe, convenient location before answering it.
Mobiles cause you to lose concentration. Although you can use a hands-free mobile whilst driving it is still likely to divert your attention from the road.
You should stop in a proper and convenient place.
You should only use a mobile phone when suitably parked.
Losing your way on a busy road
Turn into a side road, stop and check a map.
- stopping somewhere safe + checking a map=safest option.
Long Motorway journey home
Boredom can cause you to feel sleepy- you should leave the motorway and find a safe place to stop and ensure a supply of fresh air into your vehicle.
