aldosterone Antagonist Flashcards
Medications Affecting blood pressure
What are the names of aldosterone antagonist
“One” -Eplerenone ,spironolactone
What is one of the main things that aldosterone antagonist do and “retain “
Potassium
How do aldosterone antagonist work ?
they decrease blood pressure by decreasing blood volume , they decrease blood volume by blocking aldosterone receptors in the kidney
What do aldosterone antagonist promote
Promotes excretion of sodium and water and retains potassium
Because of the retention of potassium in aldosterone antagonist
R/F hyperkalemia
What are the uses of aldosterone antagonist
Use for hypertension and heart failure
What electrolyte labs should the nurse monitor ?
Sodium and potassium , hyponatremia , hyperkalemia
What type of manifestations should be watched for with this medication
flu like manifestations : fatigue, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain cough - report sever manifestations
a side effect reported in males
gynecomastia
Advise of activites that may
require alertness
Contraindicated in pts who
have a high potassium levels,Kidney impairement hepatic disease,DM - microalbuminuria, use cautiously in pt with liver impairment
These drugs can cause an increase in the R/F hyperkalemia
Verapamil, Ace inhibitors, ARBS, erythromycin, potassium sparing diuretics NSAIDS ketoconazole
R/F ————–toxicity
Lithium
————- inhibits the metabolism of eplerenone
grapefruit juice
concurrent use with diuretics
increase R/F orthostatic hypotension
