Alcohols Flashcards
Oxidation of alcohols: oxidising agent
K2Cr2O7 + acid
Oxidation of alcohols to only get an aldehyde
Distilling off product: collect in a condensing tube dripping down to remove it from the oxidising agent and to collect it in another beaker
Oxidation of alcohols to only get a carboxylic acid
Heat under reflux: have condensing tube dripping vertically so the aldehyde drips back down into the flask and is oxidised into a carboxylic acid (2nd oxidation)
Fehlings test result with an aldehyde
Blue solution turns to brick red ppt
Fehlings test result with a ketone
Blue solution does not change
Tollens test result with an aldehyde
