alcohols Flashcards
Production of ethanol
- Fermentation of sugars
2. Ethene over steam and phosphoric acid
Fermentation
yeast + glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide using anaerobic respiration
advantages of fermentation
- uses renewable resources
- uses gentle temperatures and ordinary pressure
disadvantages of fermentation
- uses a batch process so is inefficient
- the rate of production is slow
- produces very impure ethanol that needs further processing
ethene over steam and phosphoric acid
hydration - ethene + water —–> ethanol
Phosphoric acid is the catalyst
advantages of hydration
- fast reactions
- produces pure ethanol
disadvantages of hydration
- uses nonrenewable resources
- uses high temperatures and pressures
ethanol —–>ethene + water
dehydration
catalyst for dehydration
aluminum oxide
C2H5(OH)
ethanol
homologous series
compounds and molecules that react in similar ways (have similar chemical properties) but their physical properties change as you change their lengths.
