Alcohols Flashcards
Fetal alcohol syndrome is characterized by what S/E in the child?
- growth restriction
- mid facial hypoplasia
- microcephaly
- marked CNS dysfunction (including the frequent occurrence of mental retardation)
What are some other drugs that cause disulfiram-like effects?
metronidazole
griseofulvin
S/E of accumulation of acetaldehyde.
- N & V
- headache
- Hypotension
- Combines with folate to inactivate it
- Combine with thiamine to decrease availability
What are the S/E of chronic alcoholism?
- hypoglycemia
- fatty liver and lipemia
- muscle wasting (long-term alcoholic, poor food intake)
- Gout (lactate competes with urate for excretion)
Alcohol intoxication causes metabolic alkalosis or acidosis?
metabolic acidosis
What are the S/E of ethylene glycol poisoning?
- CNS depression
- Severe metabolic acidosis
- nephrotoxicity
Ethylene glycol is an important component of what?
antifreeze and coolant
What are the S/E of methanol intoxication?
- respiratory failure
- severe anion gap metabolic acidosis
- ocular damage
What are treatment options for overdose of methanol, ethylene glycol?
alcohol/ethanol or Fomepizole
Indication for Disulfiram?
For chronic alcoholism used as a deterrent because it creates the affects similar to hangover caused by acetaldehyde build up
MOA Disulfiram
blocks acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (found in mitochondria) leading to increased acetaldehyde build up and its associated uncomfortable S/E.
Draw out the process of ethylene glycol metabolism.
Draw out the process of methanol metabolism.
Draw out the process of alcohol metabolism.
Methanol is an important component of what?
windshield wiper fluid
