- Detox process

What is ‘Delirium Tremens’ and how does it present?
- onset 48 hours after abstinence
2. clinical features - hallucinations, agitation, sweating, tachycardia
How is ‘Delirium Tremens’ treated?
- benzodiazepines
2. parenteral B vitamins (Pabrinex)
What is ‘Wernicke’s Encephalopathy’?
- Acute thiamine B1 deficiency
How does ‘Wernicke’s Encephalopathy’ present?
triad of
- confusion
- ataxia
- opthalmoplegia / nastygmus
Tx of Wernicke’s Encepthalopathy
urgent replacement of thiamine
What is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
IRREVERSIBLE condition
- anterograde amnesia - inability to form new memories
- Confabulation - made up stories to fill gaps in memory
