2012 death of Daniel Christie and 2014 death of Thomas Kelly from alcohol-fuelled violence led to public outcry.
when did the government introduce lockout laws and what was it?
introduced in 2014 January and included hotels, bars, nightclubs etc to be closed at 1:30 am, and no alcohol to be served past 3 am in kings cross and CBD.

how effective was it?
moderately effective as alcohol fulled violence went down in Kings Cross by 48%, however over time areas around Kings Cross went up in alcohol-infused violence by 12%. march 2017 BOSCAR report
why and when did the lockout laws get released?
due to lobbying lockout laws were gradually released with the laws gone in the CBD in 2020, and gone from kings cross by 2021.

what did the bar association say about mandatory sentencing?
Bar Association 2014 said “ one size fits all approach is excessive or inappropriate”.
why did mandatory sentencing come about?
public outcry over R v Loveridge case as a result of grieving families and media. 5000 people signed the change.org petition including the premier and opposition leader.
what is mandatory sentencing?
introducing a minimum eight-year term for assaulting someone, causing death, while intoxicated.
went from 4-23 years to 8-25 years.
