Drug Class
Sympathomimetic, short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist
Mechanism of Action
Selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist causes bronchial smooth muscle relaxation and inhibits mediator release from mast cells
Indications and Contraindications
Indications: Treatment/prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, hyperkalemia treatment
Contraindication: Dysrhythmias, especially those by digitalis. Synergistic with other sympathomimetics
Side Effects & Interactions
Effects: Tremors, headaaches, nervousness, dizziness, dysrhythmias, chest discomfort, palpitations, nausea/vomiting, dry mouth
Interactions: Additive effects with TCAs, MAOIs, other sympathomimetics. Beta blockers may inhibit pulmonary effects, may potentiate diruetic hypokalemia
Dosage and Administration
Adult: Respiratory distress: 2.5-5mg via nebulizer or 1-2 inhalations. Signs of bronchospasm: 5mg via neb. Repeat dose unlimited times as needed. Hyperkalemia:
