Airworthiness Requirements-Aircraft Certificates & Documents Flashcards
What documents are required on board an aircraft prior to flight?
AROW
- Airworthiness Certificate
- Registration Certificate
- Radio Station License (only if you fly outside the US)
- Operating Limitations- AFM/POH and supplements, placards, markings
- Weight and balance data (current)
What is an Airworthiness Certificate?
1) Issued by FAA
2) Aircraft meets minimum design and manufacturing requirements for safe flying
3) Must meet the requirements of the original type certificate or it is no longer airworthy
What are the two different classifications of Airworthiness and what are the differences?
Standard and Special
- Standard airworthiness certificates - normal, utility, acrobatic, commuter, or transport category
- Special airworthiness certificates- primary, restricted, or limited category and light sport aircraft
What is an experimental airworthiness certificate?
1) Special airworthiness certificate in the experimental category
2) Issued to operate an aircraft that does not have a type yet
3) Kit-built aircraft that was assembled without the primary category
Does an airworthiness certificate have an expiration date?
NO, as long as aircraft meets its approved type design, is in safe operation and the maintenance condition, and preventive maintenance are performed
Where must the airworthiness certificate be located?
Cabin or cockpit entrance so it is legible to passengers
For an aircraft to be considered airworthy, what two conditions must be met?
1) Aircraft must conform to its type design (type certificate)
2) Aircraft must be in safe condition for operation
Explain how a pilot determines if an aircraft conforms to its approved type design?
For type design, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and alterations have been performed in accordance with FARs. Well documented maintenance records
Aircraft is registered in the US
Explain how a pilot determines if an aircraft conforms to safe operation?
preflight inspection for wear and tear, structural damage, fluid leaks, tire wear, inoperative instruments.
What records or document should be checked to determine that the owner or operator of an aircraft has complied with all required inspections of airworthiness directives?
Maintenance records
Who is responsible for ensuring aircraft is maintained in airworthy condition?
Owner or operator
What is AFM?
Aircraft Flight Manual
What is POH?
Pilot Operation Handbook
Describe 6 of the responsibilities an aircraft owner has pertaining to aircraft documents, maintenance, and inspections of their aircraft?
Owner must
1) have a current airworthiness certificate and registration in the aircraft
2) Maintain aircraft
3) Record maintenance properly
4) Keep up with current regulations concerning aircraft
5) notify FAA Civil Aviation Registry of any change of address or sale or export of aircraft or loss of citizenship
6) have a current FCC radio station license if equipped with radios and ELT if operated outside U.S.
What are the airworthiness directives ADs?
Airworthiness directives are when the FAA notifies aircraft owners of unsafe conditions of aircraft, such as design defects, maintenance. Compliance is mandatory.
