Airworthiness Requirements Flashcards
What documents are required on board prior to flight?
A- Airworthiness certificate R- Registration Certificate R- Radio Station LIcense (if operating outside of US) O- Operating Limitations 1. AFM/POH 2. Supplements 3. Placards 4. Markings W- Weight and balance data - current
Compass deiviation card (part 23.1547)

What is an airworthiness certificate?
Issued by FAA, meet minimum requirements of 14 part 21 and in condition for safe operations. Standard and special
What are normal and utility category airworthiness certificate?
Normal - structure handle 3.8 G without structural failure.
Utility - structure handle 4.4G, limited aerobatics, including spins if approved.
Does an airworthiness certificate expire?
No
Where must the airworthiness certificate be located?
Cabin or cockpit entrance so it is legible to passengers and crew.
What two conditions must be met for an aircraft to be airworthy?
- Must conform to type design… follow drawings and specs.
2. Must be in a safe condition regarding wear and deterioration.
Explain how to determine if an aircraft conforms to approved type design and is safe.
- Ensure all inspections, maintenance, preventative maintenance, repairs, and alterations have been documented in maintenance logs.
- Conduct thorough preflight for wear and deterioration. (If inoperative equipment, use 91.213 for handling)
What are airworthiness directives?
FAA notification to the owner of unsafe conditions. They are regulatory and must be complied with.
What are two types of airworthiness directives (AD)?
Emergency - can’t fly until done
Less urgent - required within a specified period.
Have you seen the AD list?
Yes or no?
What are special airworthiness bulletins?
FAA issues information/alerts, they are not regulatory.
What is a type certificate data sheet?
Lists conditions and limitations under the airworthiness certificate such as engine make and model, fuel type, maximum weight etc.
What is a supplemental type certificate?
FAA’s approval of a major change in the type design… airframe, engine or component when not authorized in the type certificate data sheet.
What is an aircraft registration certificate?
Before it can be flown, it must be registered with the FAA registry issued to the owner as evidence of registration. It does expire 3 years after last day of month of issue. Temporary cert is valid no more the 90 days.
Where can you find information on the placards and marking information required for the airplane?
FAA Type certification data sheet or aircraft specifications. Also in the limitations section of the AFM or as directed by an AD
Are airplane flight manuals (AFM) required to be on board all aircraft?
If they have a current and approved, yes. All aircraft manufactured after March 1, 1979 must have one.
What are required inspections, include IFR.
A- Annual A- ADs V- VOR every 30 days 1- 100 hour (for hire or instructions) A- Altimeter and static system check (for IFR) 24 months T-Transponder every 24 months E- ELT 12 months
Create a sheet and post-its in the records.
Who may do annual inspections?
Only A&P technicians holding an Inspection Authorization.
What a/c are required 100 hour inspections?
All a/c under 12,500 (except turbojet/prop mulitiengine) used to carry passengers for hire
A/c used for flight instruction for hire.
If the annual inspection date has passed, can an a/c be operated to a location where the inspection can be performed?
Yes, under special flight permit by FAA, however all applicable ADs must be complied with before the flight.
What are special flight permits
Permit to fly a/c not meeting airworthiness requirements but is safe for flight.
Fly to Base for repairs
Delivering or exporting a/c
Production flight testing new production a/c
Evacuating a/c from impending danger
Customer demonstration flight in new production a/c
How are special permits obtained?
Contact local FSDO for assistance or Designated Airworthiness Rep (DAR)
What must occur before flying or carrying passengers when alterations or repairs that may substantially affect flight?
Private pilot
Flies a/c
Makes operational check
Logs flight in the a/c records.
What is a Kinds of Operation Equipment List (KOEL)
Identifies systems and equipment which type cerfication was predicated and which must be installed and operable. It is located in the Limitations section of the POH
