Airway & Respiratory Disorders Flashcards
Define capnography
The measurement and graphic representation over time of the level of carbon dioxide in an exhaled air sample.
What is the maximal rate at which air can be forcefully exhaled from the lungs, measured in liters per minute?
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR)
Define alveolar ventilation
The volume of air that actually reaches the air sacs in the lungs each minute
Define hypercapnia
Increased level of carbon dioxide in the blood
A device that delivers a constant level of increased air pressure to the airway through a mask sealed tightly on the face
CPAP
What is ventilation-perfusion mismatch?
A condition in which either pulmonary circulation or alveolar ventilation is impaired.
What is PEEP?
Maintaining positive pressure in the airway during expiration to prevent collapse of the smaller airways and alveoli.
What is a flow-restricted oxygen powered ventilation device (FROPVD)?
A high-pressure oxygen delivery system that is manually triggered to provide positive pressure ventilation.
What is the measurement of the level of carbon dioxide in exhaled air?
capnometry
Define minute volume
The amount of air moved in and out of the lungs over one minute; determined as the tidal volume multiplied by the respiratory rate.
What devise is used to measure maximum expiratory flow rate?
Peak flow meter
What is a decreased level of carbon dioxide in the blood?
Hypocapnia
What is a combitube?
A device designed to function when placed in the esophagus by obstructing the esophagus and pharynx so that, by default, air enters the trachea.
What airway device sits in the hypopharynx, just above the glottic opening?
Supraglottic airway device
What procedure secures the patient’s airway by placing a cuffed, hollow, ventilation tube into the trachea so that its tip rests just above the carina?
Endotracheal intubation
