Airway Management Flashcards
Acidosis
A pathological condition that results from the accumulation of acids in the body
Aerobic metabolism
Metabolism that can proceed only in the presence of oxygen
Agonal gasps
Occasional gas that are in effect of attempts at breathing occurring after the heart has stopped
Airway
The upper are right track or the passage above the larynx.it includes the nose mouth and throat in the lower airway which includes the trachea and lungs also used to refer to devices used to open and maintain a patient’s airway.
Alkalosis
The buildup of excess space lack of acids in the body
Alveolar mintue volume
The volume of air moved in London one minute minus the Dead space calculated by multiplying tidal volume and respiratory rate
Alveolar
The volume of air that reaches the alveoli.
American standard system
A safety system for oxygen cylinders larger than size E
Anaerobic metabolism
The metabolism that takes place in the absence of oxygen it is the principal product of lactic acid
Anoxia
Absence of oxygen
Apnea
Absence of breathing periods of not breathing
Aspiration
The introduction of almond or other foreign material into the lungs
Asymmetrical chest wall movement
Unequal movement of two sides of the chest indicates decreased air flow into one lung
Ataxic respirations
Irregular in effect of respirations that may or may not have an identifiable pattern
Atelectasis
Condition of airless or collapsed alveoli that causes pulmonary shunting, ventilation perfusion mismatch and possible hypoxia
Automatic transport ventilator ATV
A mechanical ventilator that is used to ventilate intubated patients during transport. Has settings for tidal volume and ventilatory rate.
Bag mask device
idevice with a face mask attached to a ventilation bag containing a reservoir and connected to oxygen it delivers more than 90% of supplemental oxygen.
Barrier device
Eye protector of items such as a pocket mask with a valve that limits exposure to a patient’s body fluids.
Bilateral
A body part or condition that appears on both sides of the midline
Bilevel positive airway pressure ppap
A form of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation that delivers to pressures a high positive airway pressure and a lower positive airway pressure
Bourdon gauge flowmeter
An oxygen flow meter that is, use because of this not affected by gravity and can be placed in any position.
