ATC
A
- Has prominent position on the airfield
- Situated in the aircraft manoeuvring area

Aerodome controllers
A
- In charge of all aircraft
- Works in control tower

Approach controller
A
- Control all aircraft departing the airfield and those making instrument approaches
- Does not need a clear view of the airfield. Uses RADAR displays, BT and landline

Runway controller
A
- Lives in a red and white caravan on the airfield
- Controls vehicles and aircraft in runway area

Radio telephony
A
- Uses VHF and UHF to talk to aircraft and vehicles
- These frequencies provide clear lines of communication
- Each airfield and its sections has its own distinct frequency

Tele talk
A
Used for direct contact with vital sections on an airfield e.g. ATC, station command, medical officer and fire section

Special telephone system
A
- BT system - like at home
- The Defence Fixed Telecoms System (DFTS) - links all units and stations together
- Landlines - A special ATC System and ATCRUs are linked via cables to telecom towers

Visual communications
A
- Stationary object hazard
- Bad ground markers

Helicopter operating areas
A
- The “H” is 4m high and 2m across
- May have a box around it
- Well clear of fixed wing aircraft

RADAR
A
- Radio detection and ranging
- Transmits a pulse of energy and listens for an echo with a receiver
- The information is displayed visually on a cathode ray tube

DRDF
A
- Digital resolution direction finding
- It receives a transmission from an aircraft and displays it on a CRT as a green line
- Helps landing through clouds

ILS
A
- Instrument landing system
- Transmits a radio beam which acts as a path

Airspace
A
- Used to manage and control air traffic
- Airspace divided into classes of functional sections

A
- These are part of the airspace system
- Flying through airways requires clearance, below does not
- Like air motorways
