Airframes engines and systems Flashcards
What will you notice if one magneto is not working?
A decrease in performance.
During a Mag check there will not be a RPM drop between both and the working mag
The engine will stop running when during the mag check the mag that is not working is selected.
What four functions does oil provide for an engine?
Lubricates ,a thin film that reduces friction between moving parts Seals, a thin film forms on the parts Cools, travels through the inner parts of the engine then through an oil cooler (similar to radiator) flushes/cleans residue away from the engine.
What is the color of 80 octane fuel?
Red
The valves doing a compression stroke are?
Both are closed
What is the side effect of prolonged idling?
Fueled spark plugs
Which valves are open during the intake stroke?
The intake valve is open and in the exhaust valve is closed
You observed a sudden increase in RPM with the application of carburetor heat. what might have caused this?
Too lean a mixture. Icing would have originally caused a slight decrease as the water was injected and then an increase.
What types of problems could have arise if the mixture is too lean?
Power could be lost ,rough running and vibrations, runs hotter than desired, and potential damage due to detonation
What action should be followed after all dilution has taken place?
The engine should be wrong to burn off the fuel that’s been added
In comparison to the crankshaf, how fast does the camshaft rotate?
The camshaft rotates half the speed of the crankshaft
What type of performance would a coarse pitch it high blade angle propeller provide?
This type would provide excellence cruise performance
What main reason do airplanes have dual magnetos?
Dual magnetos provide redundancy as well as better performance
What device uses hot exhaust gases to provide dense air for the engine at high altitudes?
Turbocharger
What types of problems could arise if the mixture is too rich?
The engine may not develop rated power, runs unevenly; engine may operate cooler, fuel wasted , and risk of spark plug fouling , range reduced
What is the name given to the part of the aircraft where the elevator and horizontal stabilizer move together as “one piece”?
Stabilator
What is meant by an aircraft that is of semi monocoque construction?
The construction is made up of either formers of bulkheads and are held together by stringers, the formers of bulkheads support the loads (reference FGU)
What type of performance would fine a pitch or low blade angle propeller Provide?
This would be climb prop which provides excellent performance for take offs and climbs
