Aircraft Systems Flashcards
Describe the propeller.
McCauley, 75 inch/76 inch, 2 blade, all metal, fixed pitch propeller.
Describe the vacuum system.
2 pumps located back side of engine, providing attitude and heading gyros, normal operating range 4.5-5.5 Mercury. Failure of vac pump shown via annunciation panel. Can run only on one.
Describe your landing gear.
Fixed tricycle gear consisting of tubular spring steel providing shock absorption for main wheels. Nose strut extends in flight, locking in place. Nose wheel linked via rudder pedals by spring loaded steering bungee.
Describe the braking system.
Hydraulically actuated, main wheel single disc brakes controlled via master cylinders attracted to both pilots’ rudder pedals. When parked, main wheel may be set via parking brake.
Describe the flaps.
Single slot driven electrically via motor in right wing. Increments of 0, 10, 20, and 30 degrees.
What is the pitot static system?
Consists of pitot tube on left wing providing ram air pressure to airspeed indicator, and a static port on left side of fuselage providing static pressure to altimeter, vertical speed indicator, and airspeed indicator. Electrically heated
Explain how the fuel system works.
Two tanks in the wings with total capacity of 56 gallons, 53 usable. 13 fuel sumps. 5 on each wing. 3 under engine cowling. 3 fuel vents. 1 under left wing and 1 in each fuel cap.
Describe the electrical system.
28 volt direct current system. 24 volt 35 amp/hour battery. Energy supplies via 60 amp alternator located on front of engine. Power distributed via buses and breakers. If problem arises check breakers. Do not reset in flight.
What is your exterior lighting?
Navigation lights on wing tips and top of rudder, dual landing / taxi light configuration located on left wing leading edge, flashing beacon mounted top of vertical fin, and strobe on each wing tip.
Explain stall warning.
Inlet on left wing leading edge, ducted to a horn near top left of windshield. As stall approaches lower pressure on top of wing shifts forward drawing air through horn resulting in audible warning at 5 to 10 knots above stall.
Describe the engine in your 172.
Equipped with Lycoming 4 cylinder, fuel injected, horizontally opposed, air cooled, direct drive IO-360-L2A engine. 180 HP @ 2700 RPM. Ignition by 2 magnetos which provide spark to 8 spark plugs. 8 quart oil sump. Minimum takeoff 6 quarts.
