Aircraft Systems Flashcards
What does the acronym LHAND stand for when it pertains to the engine of the Piper Archer?
L - Lycoming
H - Horizontally Opposed
A - Air Cooled
N - Normally Aspirated
D - Direct Drive
What’s the difference between Piper Archers made in 2022 vs prior to 2022?
Archers with model years prior to 2022 have carbureted engines,
and those with model years from 2022 onwards have fuel-injected engines.
How many spark plugs does the Piper Archer have? And why?
- Engine ignition is provided through the use of two engine-driven magnetos, which are independent of the aircraft’s electrical system and each other. Each magneto powers one spark plug per cylinder
What temperatures can carburetor icing occur?
For aircraft with carbureted engines, under certain atmospheric conditions at temperatures of 20° to 70° F (-5° to 20° C)
What causes carburetor icing?
This is due to the high air velocity
through the carburetor venturi and the absorption of heat from this air by vaporization of the fuel.
What are the initial signs of carburetor icing?
The initial signs of carburetor ice can include engine roughness and a drop in RPM
What’s the acceptable range for oil in the Archer? What’s the amount you should never drop below?
The acceptable range for oil in the Archer is 6.5–8 quarts. Never depart with the oil indicating below 6 quarts.
What propeller does the Archer have on it? What’s the diameter and red line RPM?
The Archer is equipped with a Sensenich two-bladed, fixed-pitch, metal propeller. The propeller diameter is 76 inches. Maximum RPM (red line) is 2700 RPM
What landing gear does the Archer have?
The landing gear is a fixed, tricycle-type gear, with oleo (air/oil) struts providing shock absorption for all three wheels
What is the purpose of the “Shimmy Damper”?
Dampens nose wheel vibrations during ground operations and centers the nose wheel in the air.
What degree can the nose wheel turn to on each side?
20 Degrees
Does the Archer have disc brakes or drum brakes?
Disc brakes
Is the flap system on the Archer manual or hydraulic?
Manual
What are the flap degrees settings?
0°, 10°, 25°, and 40°, and are spring-loaded to return to the 0 ° position.
What is the ATP policy for flap usage?
ATP operations require flaps 25° for all landings except:
* Short and soft field, flaps 40°
* Precision approach, flaps 10°
Where is the pitot head located?
Bottom of the left wing
