Aircraft Icing CONT. Flashcards
What happens when ice accumulates on an airplane?
Ice changes the shape of the flying surfaces, primarily accumulating at the leading edges. It adds weight and can change the shape of the propeller’s airfoil.
How should you approach if there is ice on your airplane?
Make your approach at a higher than normal airspeed due to increased weight and stalling speed.
What should you do with flaps settings if there is a lot of ice?
Either restrict flaps settings or use no flaps.
What should you expect if the windshield is iced over during landing?
You will have to land with little or no forward visibility. A landing would best be made on a runway with an ILS.
What occurs when the airplane starts shedding ice?
There can be loud noises as the ice from the wings bangs into the tail and as the ice from the nose hits the windshield.
