Aircraft Icing Flashcards
They are 3 main types of airframe
Rime ice
Clear ice
Mix ice
Ingredients to build up ice on a plane
Temp below 0
visible Moisture
Rime ice
This is form by the instantaneous freezing of small supercooled water droplets (skin temp below 0)
Rough milky and opaque looks like the inside of the freezer
Typically layer type clouds like stratus
Clear ice
Formed when large supercooled water drops slowly freeze to the aircraft
Smooth and transparent
Most dangerous type of icing
Cumulus
Mixed ice
Combination of rim ice and clear ice
Ice accumulation factors that have effects on the rate
Airfoil shape
Airfoil speed
Droplet size
Airfoil shape characteristics
Thin airfoil tends to to collect ice more than a thick one.
Thin wings collect quicker ice than thick wings
Higher Airspeed result in greater rates of ice accumulation
4 icing intensity
Trace
Light

Severe
