Aircraft finishes Flashcards
What are thinners
Solvents use to reduce viscosity
What is acetone and what is it used for
Is a fast evaporating colorless solvent. It is used as an ingredient in paint, nail polish, and varnish removers. It is a strong solvent for most plastics and is ideal for thinning fiberglass resin, polyester resin, vinyl, and adhesives.
What are the three types of alcohol that we discussed and how is each used
Butyl alcohol- mixed with dope to retard drying.
Denatured alcohol-cleaner degreaser
Isopropyl- rubbing alcohol
What is benzene
Highly flammable colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is product used in some paint and varnish removers. Extremely toxic
What is methylene ethyl ketone and why do we use it so often if it is harmful
Is highly flammable liquid solvent used in paint and varnish removers, paint and primer thinners. Highly effectiveness as a quickly evaporating solvent.
What is toluene used for in paint processes
Thinner for zinc chromate primer. It is clear water insoluble liquid
What type of paints is turpentine typically used with
Quick dryer used in oil based paints
What is not her name for mineral spirits and what do we use it for
Stoddard solvent and is used a paint thinner and mild solvent. Cleaning and degreasing
Does naphtha have a low or high flashpoint
Low flashpoint
What is the difference is linseed oil and boiled linseed oil
Boiled linseed oil was processed without the additives.
What do we use linseed oil for
It makes the paint more fluid transparent and glossy. Also a protective layer on the interior of metal tubing.
What are the three methods for paint removal
Chemical stripping, plastic media blasting, bead blasting
What are the four primers that we looked at and briefly describe them
Wash primer- water thin coatphosphoric acid in solutions , alcohol and other ingredients. Are to passivate the surface, temp proved corrosion resistance
Why do we not use bonds on aircraft for contouring
Because it doesn’t provide flexibility
How do we calculate if there is sufficient moisture in the air when applying finishes
Wet bulb/ dry bulb and chart
