Airbrakes Flashcards
Reservoir made up of an Auxiliary Reservoir and Emergency Reservoir in the same structure.
Combined Reservoir
All brakes have to apply, but not release
Transfer Train Brake Test
A valve located at each end of a locomotive or car used to open or close the brake pipe. When the handle is in line with the pipe, it is open. When the handle is crosswise to the pipe, it is closed.
Angle Cock
A device on cars and locomotives, which converts the force of compressed air into a mechanical force to move brake shoes against the wheels.
Brake Cylinder
The pipe extending the length of a car, locomotive, or train through which air brakes are charged, applied, and released.
Brake Pipe
A device used for cutting in and cutting out the control valve on a locomotive or car. When the handle is crosswise to the pipe, the cut-out cock is open. When the handle is in line with the pipe, the cut-out cock is closed.
Branch pipe cut-out
Or
Cut-out Cock
A valve designed to provide a means for releasing brake cylinder pressure on a freight car by actuating a _____ near the control valve that is to be identified by a small loop or handle on the _____.
Bleed Rod
A storage volume for compressed air, charged from the brake pipe, which provides air pressure for use in service and emergency brake applications. An _____ is located on each car, contained in the same structure as the emergency reservoir.
Auxiliary Reservoir
A storage volume for compressed air, charged from the brake pipe, which provides air pressure for use in emergency applications and certain recharge features. An ______ is located on each car, contained in the same structure as the auxiliary reservoir.
Emergency Reservoir
Use the _______ when the train’s controlling locomotive is equipped with 26/30 or electronic air brake equipment and an air flow indicator.
Air Flow Method
(AFM)
The distance, measured in inches that a brake cylinder piston moves when the air brake is applied.
Piston Travel
When the air brake system on a car or cars is/are not being supplied with air pressurized to 60PSI or more.
Off Air
An air supply used in yards and other areas to charge car air brake systems for testing purposes. A ______ may also be used to supply air to a train or block of cars that have already been tested.
Yard Line
Head End Train Device (HTD) and End of Train Device (EOT) communicate using this in a two way system.
Telemetry
A train with an engine and one or more cars that may pick up or set off at intermediate location(s) between a point of origin and destination not exceeding 20 miles.
