air pollution Flashcards
what is complete combustion?
When there’s plenty of oxygen around all of the fuel burns
what is incomplete combustion?
When there’s not enough oxygen around some of the fuel does not burn
what are particulates?
solid particles
what happens during incomplete combustion?
Solid particles (Called particulates) and unburnt fuel are released. Carbon monoxide gas is also produced
what happens when particulates are breathed in?
They can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage. This can lead to breathing problems.
why is carbon monoxide really dangerous?
Because it can stop your blood from carrying enough oxygen around the body.
what can a lack of oxygen cause?
It can lead to fainting , a coma or death
why is carbon monoxide very hard to detect?
Because it does not have colour or smell.
when is Sulfur dioxide released?
Released during the combustion of fossil fuels.
