Q

Why is carbon monoxide poisonous?

A

Carbon monoxide is poisonous due to the formation of carboxyhaemoglobin in the blood, which is 300 times more stable than oxyhaemoglobin, cutting off the supply of oxygen in the brain. 5-6% of carboxyhaemoglobin will cause headaches, nervousness and poor eyesight.

Q

Basics about nitrogen oxide

A
  1. a natural source of NO2 is the oxidization of the nitrate ion formed as a product of the reaction between N2 and O2 due to lightning.
  2. Source - Automobile engine at high temperature (1483K) combustion of fossil fuel

Q

All reactions of Acid rain, and types of acid rain.

A

There are two types of acid rain, ( when acid from the atmosphere settles on the earth)
Dry Deposit (can happen on both solid and liquid surfaces) - SO2, NO2
Wet deposit - Can be present in form of aerosols, like ammonia/ gases which settle on the ground as snow, rain, fog, etc.

Q

After effect of acid rain

A
  1. Dissolves nutrients required for plant growth.
  2. Leeching of heavy metals due to corrosion of pipes made of lead, copper, and iron.
  3. corrosion of infrastructure made out of metals, like bridges ( may cause collapses over time)
  4. Changing chemical compositions of water bodies like lakes, rivers, etc.

Q

Basics of Hydrocarbons

A

Methane is the main gas that contributes to the pollution of the air.
Methane is naturally formed when vegetation is burnt/digested/ rotten in the absence of oxygen
Major sources include
1. Paddy fields
2. garbage dumps
3. fossil fuels
