Air Particles (test 6&7) Flashcards

1
Q

Nitrogen Dioxide (No2)

A

Comes from: combustion of coal
Fixed by: 3-way catalytic converters
is a respiratory irritant and criteria pollutant

remember: it’s a kinky one think DIEoxide- it likes to choke you, 3-ways, and bust that coal, but has cirteria for you to meet

Q

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)

A

From: pine trees, also in gasoline
Removed by: Dry scrubbers
respiratory irritant (glues, paints, plastics) and brown smog

Remember: She’s a granola girly and lives from the trees but also drives that uhaul, but suprisingly shes straight… so she only likes dry scrubbers

Methane (CH4)

A

Comes from: agricultural practices
is a greenhouse gas (we need to do less)

Remember: who doesn’t know what methane is???

Q

Octane (C8H18)

A

From: Gasoline
Solved: 3-ways
respiratory irritant

Remember: ocTANE sounds like proPANE which is basically like gasoline… right (you should know that it’s not) but anyway remember it that way

Q

Propane C3H8

A

3-way catalytic converters
respiratory irritant

(lump this into the 5 VOCs that are all similar… methane is the most important. Propane is BASIC as heck)

Q

Benzene C6H6

A

from gasoline and dry cleaners
causes cancer and respiratory irritant

Remember: Only a dry cleaner would have a name like BENZENE, and he would drive an expensive car (gasoline). plus he would probably die of cancer :/

Q

Formaldehyde CH20

A

causes cancer
respiratory irritant

Remember: she tries with a long name, but she’s really not unique

Q

Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

A

Comes from combustion of coal
Removed by fluid bed combustion and dry scrubbers, is a criteria pollutant

Remember: Sulfer is basically Surfer, so he clearly likes fluid… bed combustion. And he would be gay obvi, so dry scrubbers. But like all gays, he’s picky with the criteria he needs

Q

Sulfate (SO4)

A

Secondary pollutant & Gray smog
Removed by Fluid Bed Combustion &Dry Scrubber

Think: Sulfur’s brother SulFATE. He’s the SECONDARY son and so he’s a lot more basic, and depressed (gray smog) but he’s also a gay surfer

Q

Sulfuric Acid H2SO4

A

secondary pollutant
Acid rain

Remember: ACID (duh) and he’s the emo twin brother of sulfate so he’s the other secondary pollutant

Q

Sulfur Hexaflouride (SF6)

A

Comes from: Anthropogenic sources
Greenhouse gas, used in eletctrical power systems

Think: He’s the brother who tried too hard… he became the people pleaser and moved to the big city where he contributed to GHG

Q

Oxygen Radical O*

A

Ozone depleting
Brown Smog

Remember: It’s a radical, so of course it would love the brown smog… which is clearly depleting our country

Q

Nitrogen Monoxide (NO)

A

Criteria Pollutant
Comes from: Combustion of coal
respriatory irritant

Remember: It’s the MONOgamous version of DIEoxide: same thing, but it don’t like them 3-way

16
Q

Nitrous Oxide (N2O)

A

Secondary Pollutant
Comes from: Agricultural practices
GHG

Remember: Second favorite child bc it’s not from coal but from agriculture (secondary pollutant)
OXide like 🐂 so clearly from ag

17
Q

Nitrate (N03)

A

Broken down by catalytic converters
secondary pollutant

Remember: the name is plain… it isn’t picky and likes any catalytic converters probably bc it was picked second it’s entire life. RATE bc it’s always looking for whatever date it can and is asking for them to rate him for the validation he never gets

18
Q

Nitric Acid (HNO3)

A

Acid rain
Secondary pollutant

Remember: The only N that is a criteria pollutant starts with Nitrogen… they’re superior and can afford to have criteria to meet

19
Q

Ozone (O3)

A

Can be criteria, secondary, and non-polluting in different tropospheres
GHG

Remember: You would think the OZONE would be good, but it’s NOT

20
Q

Mercury (Hg)

A

From: Anthropogenic sources and combustion and VOLCANIC ERUPTION

Remember: Mercury is literally like the coolest little guy he EXPLODES VOLCANOES but he also likes humans and busting literally whatever he can find (he’s just cool like that)

21
Q

Lead (Pb)

A

From: Anthropogenic sources, combustion, and in some paint
Criteria Pollutant

Remember: You just know that lead is artsy… she has her criteria and she likes her painting art. And all artistists like busting it and humans

22
Q

UV Radiation

A

Ozone depleting
grey + brown smog
cancer

Remember: sunscreen (who doesn’t know the sun causes cancer???) but also somehow it depletes the ozone… DOES THE OZONE HAVE CANCER???

23
Q

Water Vapor (H20)

A

From: 3-way catalytic converters and also naturally
Non-air polluting
GHG

Remember: It’s WATER, of course it’s polyamorous, it loves ALL THINGS. But converters don’t change it, they produce it. Makes sense if you think about it…

24
Q

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

A

From: Combustion of Coal and 3-way catalytic converters, and VOLCANOES
GHG but non-air polluting

Remember: Think DIE again: kinky. But bc we make it, it’s not a choker. It’s not a respiratory irritant But it does like lava…

25
Q

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

A

From: Anthropogenic sources and in fire extenguishers, ACs, etc
GHG and ozone depleting

Remember: Of course a name like that would try to be like the sun and deplete the ozone. And only only people would condone that

26
Q

Asbestos

A

From: Only anthropogenic sources
In insulation and respiratory irritant

Remember: Asbestos- Anthropogenic sources but especially sucky to orally sniff

27
Q

Radon-222 (Rn)

A

From: Natural sources
causes cancer and is an indoor pollutant

Remember: Respiratory AcaDacadavera but Only Natural :)

28
Q

Particulate Matter (PM)

A

From: Combustion
Solved: Electrostatic Precipitators, fabric/baghouse filters, and scrubbers
criteria pullutant, gray smog

Remember: If it’s particles of matter it’s going to promote smog, and also you’re going to need some fancy cleaners. also people BUST at night soooo

29
Q

Carbonic Acid (H2CO3)

A

Most commonly an issue with acid rain in the ocean
secondary pollutant

Remember: CARBONIC sounds like CAR which sinks in the ocean… lol

30
Q

Carbon Tetrachloride (CCL4)

A

From: Anthropogenic Sources, dry cleaners and fire extinguishers

Remember: Tetra sounds fast which comes from humans… our bad sutff
